Kitebeach Australia - serving the local community...

The Kitebeach Australia site is dedicated to the Kitebeach Bright kiting community but also serves kiteboarding in the North East of Port Phillip Bay in Melbourne, Victoria - This includes Altona, St.Kilda, Kitebeach Brighton, Hampton, Ricketts Point and others as information comes to hand.   This site offers a look at the beaches, the locals, the riders, the conditions, and also offers local news, safety and tips (safety, equipment care, kiteboarding tips and etiquette, glossary of terms and definitions, articles of interest)...

The peak kiteboarding body for kiteboarding in Australia is the Australian KiteSurfing Association (AKSA) and the local kitesurfing association in Victoria is Kiteboarding Victoria (KBV)

A Note to Visitors from Overseas/Interstate

We occasionally receive questions regarding kite and board hire, best kiting locations, and accommodation in Melbourne.

Equipment hire: There arte a number of kiting schools in Melbourne which might be prepared to rent you a kite and equipment if they are satisfied you can handle them – the issue here is insurance and liability some organisations are reluctant to hire a rig to a someone  who then goes out and injures themself or someone else. The schools are in a position to assess your skills if they are prepared to hire equipment to you. The schools may also have all the rest you want to hire.

There are also a number of watersport shops here which sell second-hand rigs and boards. The alternative is to buy some local second-hand gear which you can sell before you leave.

Insurance: While you do not yet have to have a liting license in Australia, insurance is strongly advised. This can be obtained through Australian KiteSurfing Association (AKSA) or any of the schools, and should cover you throughout Australia.

Accommodation is a difficult one – best locations is St Kilda or South Melbourne but you can get accom almost anywhere depending on your mobility (hire car?). We would suggest posting your message to www.seabreeze.com.au (try the VICTORIA (KBV) and the GENERAL kiting forums) which cater for just this form of question –WeI have seen previous instances where visitors looking for accommodation received good advice and even offers for short stays.

Best locations: Check out what this site offers and chat to the locals - Victoria ofers a variety of locations that generallly cater for a range of wind conditions and kiting experience.
